Yesterday, Gupshup, in collaboration with Meta, the Sudan Medical Specialization Board, and non-profit Shabaka, unveiled a groundbreaking telemedicine chatbot. This innovative tool aims to bridge healthcare gaps for Sudanese refugees across Egypt, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Djibouti, and neighboring nations, where access to medical services is limited.
With over 8.6 million Sudanese displaced due to ongoing conflicts, this initiative targets nearly 800,000 refugees who urgently need healthcare support. The telemedicine chatbot, accessible via WhatsApp, allows refugees to connect with healthcare professionals swiftly and efficiently, ensuring timely medical assistance.
The project leverages conversational AI to triage patient inquiries, directing them to a network of over 18 specialty doctors. This seamless integration enables refugees to receive comprehensive healthcare consultations through any internet-enabled device, ensuring privacy and compliance with regulatory standards.
Founder and CEO of Gupshup, Beerud Sheth, expressed pride in contributing to this humanitarian effort, emphasizing technology’s role in improving lives amidst adversity. This initiative underscores Gupshup’s commitment to leveraging AI for social good and supporting global humanitarian causes.
Dr. Sara Ibrahim Abdelgalil, senior advisor and project lead at Shabaka, highlighted the impactful collaboration with Gupshup and Meta, enabling Sudanese medical professionals to effectively deliver telemedicine services amid challenging circumstances. This partnership is pivotal in expanding access to essential healthcare services for vulnerable populations.
The telemedicine chatbot currently supports Arabic and English, with plans to add more languages based on demand. This multilingual approach ensures inclusivity and accessibility for all Sudanese refugees seeking medical assistance.
