Pieter Prickaerts, Managing Director of Kenya’s leading health insurance technology platform, M-TIBA, has been appointed as CEO of CarePay International, leading its global expansion. The Supervisory Board of CarePay International announced that Prickaerts will officially assume the CEO position on July 1, 2024, while continuing to oversee M-TIBA’s operations in Kenya. This transition marks a new chapter for CarePay, with Prickaerts poised to build on the company’s proven success.

Prickaerts succeeds Kees van Lede, who has led CarePay for nine years and will transition to an advisory role while remaining closely involved as a co-founder. This seamless transition ensures continuity in leadership and the ongoing commitment to CarePay’s mission. Additionally, Rita Okuthe’s appointment to the Supervisory Board underscores the company’s dedication to incorporating Kenyan leadership and expertise in its strategic decisions.

Under Prickaerts’ leadership, CarePay’s technology has significantly enhanced the accessibility and affordability of health insurance for Kenyans. Joining CarePay in 2019 as customer success director and becoming managing director of M-TIBA in 2023, Prickaerts has been instrumental in scaling the platform’s impact. His previous roles at McKinsey & Company across various global locations have equipped him with the expertise to drive CarePay’s global growth.

CarePay’s platform connects individual members with payers and healthcare providers in real-time, efficiently managing patient payments and information flows. This cloud-based technology reduces administrative costs, accelerates hospital payments through automation and AI, and enhances transparency and patient experience. Over 4.8 million individuals and 5,000 healthcare providers have already joined the platform, showcasing its wide-reaching impact.

CarePay raised $45 million in Series A funding in 2019 and was recognized in Fortune’s 500 ‘Change the World’ index in 2020. Prickaerts emphasized the transformative impact of technology on healthcare administration, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where less than 15 percent of the population has access to health insurance. Expanding access to health insurance is crucial, and Prickaerts is committed to advancing CarePay’s mission globally.

The board has full confidence in Prickaerts’ ability to lead CarePay to new heights. His gratitude towards Kees van Lede for his contributions and dedication to advancing CarePay sets the tone for a collaborative and forward-thinking leadership approach. With a robust and diverse management team supporting him, Prickaerts is well-positioned to drive global healthcare transformation and continue CarePay’s legacy of innovation.
