Cameroon Telecoms (Camtel) has announced a significant partnership with Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation (Camwater) to share infrastructure, marking a major step forward in expanding its national terrestrial optic fibre backbone network. Under this agreement, both Camtel and Camwater will leverage each other’s existing infrastructure to enhance their operations. This collaboration is expected to facilitate seamless integration of their terrestrial networks, ensuring better service delivery and operational efficiency.
Camtel has set an ambitious goal to achieve nationwide network coverage by 2030. The infrastructure sharing agreement with Camwater is a crucial component of this plan, enabling the telecom giant to prioritize network expansion while optimizing resources and reducing costs.
Judith Yah Sunday Achidi, the general manager of Camtel, highlighted the importance of this partnership for the security and stability of the telecom’s network. She emphasized that utilizing Camwater’s pipes and conduits in major cities like Douala and Yaounde will secure metropolitan loops, enhancing network reliability in these urban centers.
The development of fibre optic broadband is essential for Cameroon’s future, requiring significant extensions in the coming years. Judith pointed out that sharing the cost of establishing a single network among various players is far more beneficial than creating multiple competing networks, promoting a more sustainable and efficient approach to infrastructure development.
