The State Department for Investment and Industry is pushing to expand the existing Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Athi River by acquiring an additional 1,000 hectares of land owned by the East Africa Portland Cement Company (EAPCC). PS Abubakar Hassan Abubakar highlighted the ministry’s efforts to enhance industrial growth, particularly in plug-and-play facilities for apparel investors.

“This expansion is crucial to accommodate the envisioned growth of the EPZ program, particularly in providing industrial space for apparel investors,” stated PS Abubakar during a meeting with the National Assembly’s Committee on Implementation.

The ministry is also focusing on developing more industrial sheds to meet the demand from investors looking to lease ready-built facilities. This initiative aims to reduce operational costs and turnaround time for businesses operating within the Athi River zone.

Additionally, the ongoing construction of a new cargo railway link line is expected to boost growth and investment in the area, further supporting the expansion of the EPZ.

The Export Promotion Authority Zones (EPZA) has identified the EAPCC’s land as ideal for the expansion, underscoring its strategic location and potential to attract new investments.

To support local industries, the ministry is championing advanced farming practices to improve the supply of raw materials such as macadamia, avocado, cashew nuts, and horticultural products. This initiative not only enhances backward linkages but also supports livelihoods for Kenyan farmers while reducing the country’s dependency on imported raw materials.

In response to a directive from the National Assembly, the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry is revising the Export Processing Zones policy to address current challenges and enhance productivity. This includes developing a comprehensive policy and overhauling the EPZ Act through the draft Export Processing Zones Authority Bill, 2023.
