Glovo has partnered with EV manufacturer Siltech to utilize its electric vehicle products and services for deliveries in select areas of Lagos, Nigeria. This strategic partnership aims to reduce costs associated with petrol and maintenance for internal combustion engine motorcycles, positioning Glovo at the forefront of sustainable delivery solutions.
Siltech CEO, Tolu Williams, confirmed the partnership, noting that Glovo has signed on to use Siltech’s comprehensive services, including charging stations, after-sales services, technical support, and access to battery swaps. The initial pilot will launch in Ikate, Lekki, and Victoria Island, where Siltech has established charging and battery swap stations.
The high cost of petrol in Nigeria has pushed businesses to explore alternatives, with EVs emerging as a viable solution. Glovo’s adoption of Siltech’s electric bikes highlights this shift, showcasing a commitment to cost-effective and environmentally friendly delivery methods. Williams emphasized that the partnership offers Glovo a more economical option compared to petrol, despite a fee for services at a discounted rate.
Siltech’s innovative battery swap stations will enable Glovo riders to replace depleted batteries with fully charged ones in minutes, significantly reducing downtime. This feature is a key component of the Siltech Ginsu bikes that Glovo will use, ensuring efficient and uninterrupted delivery services.
Although the partnership has been formalized, Glovo’s use of EV bikes for deliveries will not commence for a few months. However, when it does, Williams anticipates a substantial reduction in delivery costs for Glovo, thanks to the multiple services provided by Siltech. This collaboration underscores the growing trend of businesses considering EVs as a sustainable alternative to traditional petrol-powered vehicles.
Glovo’s partnership with Siltech reflects a broader movement towards embracing electric vehicles in Nigeria, despite challenges faced by local manufacturers. This initiative not only supports the shift to cleaner transportation but also sets a precedent for other businesses to follow.
