Safaricom Ethiopia has announced a groundbreaking move to use locally produced telecom towers for its network buildout. Partnering with Woda Metals, an Ethiopian manufacturer specializing in power transmission towers, telecom towers, cables, galvanization, and steel structures, this initiative marks a significant milestone in localizing infrastructure development. Safaricom Ethiopia recently received 13 of the 68 towers ordered from Woda, Ethiopia’s first such manufacturer.

“This is a historic moment for Safaricom in Ethiopia because we have begun to localize the manufacturing of our infrastructure,” stated Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Wim Vanhelleputte. This step not only supports local industry but also enhances Safaricom Ethiopia’s ability to expand its network more efficiently and effectively. With the new towers, Safaricom aims to boost its network quality and user base, which currently stands at 4.4 million.

Vanhelleputte praised the quality of Woda’s towers, noting their galvanization plant is the largest in East Africa. The cost-effectiveness and quality of these towers are expected to play a crucial role in Safaricom Ethiopia’s expansion plans. As of December 31, 2023, the telco had launched 2,242 base stations in 33 cities, including major and medium towns, covering 33% of the population. The goal is to enhance connectivity quality and broaden network coverage further.

Woda Metal’s CEO, Steven Cui, expressed pride in being the first local company to deliver telecom towers to Safaricom Ethiopia. This collaboration signifies a strong partnership and a commitment to leveraging local capabilities to advance telecommunications infrastructure in Ethiopia.

Safaricom Ethiopia’s strategic use of locally manufactured towers is set to revolutionize the telecommunications landscape in the country. By supporting local manufacturing, the company is not only fostering economic growth but also ensuring sustainable development within the telecom sector.
