Microsoft and G42 are teaming up to build a hyperscale data centre in Kenya, part of a US$1-billion investment plan in the region. This initiative forms a key part of a comprehensive digital investment package in Kenya.
The new Microsoft Azure East Africa Cloud Region will be a state-of-the-art green data centre, powered entirely by renewable geothermal energy in Olkaria, Kenya. This facility is designed to support Microsoft Azure services, enhancing digital infrastructure across East Africa.
The investment includes building a local-language AI model, establishing an East Africa Innovation Lab, and providing broad AI digital skills training. It also entails significant international and local connectivity investments, boosting regional digital capabilities.
Microsoft and G42 will collaborate closely with the Kenyan government to ensure safe and secure cloud services across East Africa. This partnership aims to support economic growth, innovation, and digital transformation in the region.
A letter of intent will be signed during Kenyan President William Ruto’s state visit to the US, marking a milestone in US-Africa relations and emphasizing the strategic importance of this investment.
The East Africa Cloud Region is set to become operational within 24 months of the agreement, accelerating digital infrastructure development and enhancing Microsoft Azure’s capabilities in the region.
