Local electric vehicles assembler BasiGo receives a significant boost with orders for 500 buses from PSV operators in Nairobi, signaling a major expansion for the firm. Founder and CEO Jit Bhattacharya announced the orders, expressing eagerness to deliver them promptly after receiving deposits for the business. This surge in orders marks a remarkable increase in sales for BasiGo, amplifying its presence in the electric vehicle market.

The orders come as BasiGo recently inaugurated Kenya’s first assembly line for electric buses at the Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers plant in Thika, demonstrating its commitment to local manufacturing and sustainable transportation solutions. With plans to ramp up production to 20 buses per month, BasiGo is poised to meet the growing demand for electric buses in Kenya’s evolving mobility landscape.

Despite the promising growth of e-mobility in Kenya, challenges persist, notably the lack of sufficient charging infrastructure nationwide. However, initiatives such as Kenya Power’s recent investment of Sh258 million in electric vehicles and related infrastructure over the next three years underscore a collective effort to address this issue and propel the adoption of e-mobility across the country.

As the government pledges further incentives, including tax breaks, to support the electric vehicle sector’s competitiveness, BasiGo stands at the forefront of driving innovation and sustainability in Kenya’s transportation industry. With the surge in orders and ongoing investments in infrastructure, the future of e-mobility in Kenya looks promising, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable transportation ecosystem.
