Kenya Power announces a groundbreaking initiative to retrofit off-grid stations with solar panels, aiming to save consumers an estimated Sh2 billion annually. Through a donor-funded program, the utility plans to hybridize existing thermal stations with solar PV systems, reducing reliance on expensive fuel and transitioning towards renewable energy sources. Managing Director Joseph Siror highlights the significant benefits, stating that the stations will utilize solar power during the day and seamlessly switch to fuel at night, ultimately leading to lower electricity prices for consumers. This innovative project aligns with Kenya Power’s commitment to reducing fuel costs and minimizing carbon emissions. With plans to retrofit 18 thermal stations and expand the initiative with government funding, the utility anticipates a substantial decrease in fuel consumption and a significant reduction in carbon footprint. Additionally, Kenya Power is concurrently implementing the World Bank-funded Kenya Off-grid Solar Access Project, furthering efforts to enhance electricity access in underserved regions across 14 counties.
