oChinese media reports indicate that China has greenlit over 40 artificial intelligence (AI) models for public utilization within the initial six months of the approval process, signaling the nation’s determination to narrow the gap with the U.S. in AI advancement. Last week, Chinese regulators granted approval for 14 large language models (LLMs) for public application, marking the fourth batch of approvals. Among the recipients are prominent entities such as Xiaomi Corp, 4Paradigm, as reported by the state-backed Securities Times.
The initiative stems from Beijing’s directive mandating tech firms to secure regulatory approval for the public release of their LLMs, initiated last August. This reflects China’s strategic approach to AI development, emphasizing control and oversight while fostering technological progress.
The approval process commenced in August, with major Chinese players like Baidu, Alibaba, and ByteDance being among the early beneficiaries. Subsequent batches of approvals were granted in November and December, with another batch receiving authorization this month, although the government has not disclosed the full roster of approved companies publicly. Despite this, reports suggest that over 40 AI models have received official approval, showcasing the accelerated pace of AI innovation in China since the global success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022.
