Vodacom South Africa has successfully tested the world’s first integrated passive-active Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) solution, marking a significant step in the evolution of its 4G and 5G network. The pilot, conducted in partnership with Nokia in the Western Cape, demonstrates how the technology can increase network capacity at sites where physical and structural constraints have historically limited expansion. By combining multiple antenna capabilities into a more compact configuration, the solution allows Vodacom to make more efficient use of existing network sites and deploy additional capacity where conventional upgrades are difficult.
The integrated passive-active antenna solution supports dual-band Massive MIMO across the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum bands. This enables Vodacom to use its spectrum more efficiently and direct capacity to high-demand urban areas where physical space is limited and traditional network expansion is more complex. For customers, the result is a more consistent 4G and 5G experience, with smoother streaming, quicker downloads and improved network performance in areas where demand for connectivity is high.

Following the successful on-site testing, Vodacom will now deploy the solution across its existing network at identified sites where additional capacity is needed. The upgrade forms part of the operator’s continued investment in building a more resilient, efficient and future-ready network. The world-first deployment reflects Vodacom’s commitment to meeting South Africa’s changing connectivity needs by ensuring customers can access reliable, high-quality connectivity.
