MTN Nigeria has crossed the 100 million active subscriber mark, further strengthening its position as the country’s largest mobile network operator, according to July 2026 industry statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
NCC data shows that MTN Nigeria recorded 100.86 million active GSM subscribers in July, representing 51.76% of Nigeria’s total GSM market. The milestone places MTN well ahead of its closest competitor, Airtel, which recorded 66.76 million subscribers and a 34.26% market share.
Globacom followed with 23.63 million subscribers, accounting for 12.13% of the market, while 9mobile, listed as T2 in the NCC data, recorded 3.61 million subscribers and a 1.85% market share.
Nigeria’s overall active telephone subscriber base also increased during the month, reaching 195.11 million in July compared with 192.23 million in June. Overall teledensity rose to 90%.
The growth comes amid continued demand for mobile connectivity and data services. According to the NCC, mobile GSM internet subscriptions reached 157.27 million in July, while broadband subscriptions stood at 124.42 million, translating to a broadband penetration rate of 57.40%.
Nigeria’s data consumption also continued to rise, with internet data usage reaching 1.66 million terabytes in July, up from 1.53 million terabytes in June and the highest monthly figure recorded in the latest NCC statistics.
The NCC said its industry statistics are compiled using regular studies, surveys and data submitted by licensed telecommunications operators. The information is used to monitor industry trends, assess competition and market dominance, and identify areas requiring regulatory intervention.
MTN’s latest milestone gives the operator more than half of Nigeria’s active GSM subscriber market, highlighting its continued scale in one of Africa’s largest telecommunications markets.
