Egypt is set to expand its data centre and artificial intelligence infrastructure through new strategic partnerships involving Vodafone Business, Elsewedy Electric and Cassava Technologies.
Announced in Cairo on September 8, 2026, the partnerships are expected to strengthen Egypt’s capacity to host and process data locally while supporting the country’s ambition to become a regional hub for cloud computing, AI and digital infrastructure.
One of the agreements will establish Africa Data Centres Egypt, with an initial 20MW capacity planned during its first three years and a long-term target of 200MW. The project is expected to attract approximately $200 million in foreign direct investment during its first phase, with total investment projected to reach $1 billion once the targeted capacity is completed.
The development is also expected to create up to 200 direct jobs and approximately 2,000 indirect employment opportunities, with Egyptian professionals expected to participate in the construction, operation and management of the facility.
The project brings together Vodafone Business’ cloud and enterprise services expertise, Elsewedy Electric’s capabilities in energy, infrastructure and project execution, and Cassava Technologies’ experience in developing data centre infrastructure across Africa.
The facility is expected to serve large enterprises, cloud service providers and international technology companies operating in or expanding into Egypt, providing additional capacity for locally hosted digital workloads.
A second partnership between Vodafone Business and Cassava Technologies will focus on developing what the companies describe as Egypt’s first sovereign AI data centre. The facility will provide advanced computing infrastructure, including NVIDIA technologies, to support the development and deployment of AI applications while enabling data to remain hosted and processed within Egypt.
The AI facility will also offer GPU-as-a-Service locally, allowing organisations to access high-performance computing resources for AI workloads without transferring sensitive information outside the country. The initiative is expected to support wider AI adoption while strengthening data security, regulatory compliance and control over locally hosted information.
Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Raafat Hindi, said the projects reflect the rapid growth of the country’s ICT sector and increasing private-sector confidence in its digital economy. He highlighted the shift from focusing primarily on digital services toward developing the infrastructure and capabilities required to support future economic growth.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is also developing a national data centre strategy to assess future storage and computing requirements, attract local and international investment, strengthen the regulatory environment and promote international standards for data centre development.
The strategy is expected to address operational efficiency, sustainability, specialised skills development and digital sovereignty. Hindi also highlighted Egypt’s geographic position and extensive submarine cable network as advantages that could support its emergence as a regional hub for data, cloud services and AI.
Vodafone Egypt CEO and Vodafone Group regional head for international markets, Mohamed Abdallah, said the partnerships demonstrate Vodafone’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s digital transformation through infrastructure investment, AI applications and technology partnerships.
Cassava Technologies described Egypt as a strategic market within its broader plans to develop digital infrastructure across Africa and the Middle East. The company said the projects will provide scalable infrastructure for enterprises, cloud providers and technology companies while supporting international investment.
With demand for cloud computing, AI applications and advanced data processing continuing to grow, the projects are expected to increase Egypt’s ability to host critical data and AI workloads locally and reinforce its ambitions to become a regional digital infrastructure and AI hub.
