Range Rover has unveiled its first fully electric model, the Range Rover Electric, marking a major step in parent company JLR’s transition towards expanded electric vehicle production.
The launch comes after a year-long delay to the vehicle’s planned introduction. The Range Rover Electric will be built at JLR’s Solihull facility as the company expands electric vehicle manufacturing across its West Midlands operations.
JLR has invested in developing new battery and electric drive unit production capabilities while up-skilling 10,500 workers for electric vehicle manufacturing. This includes around 9,000 employees in Solihull and a further 1,500 workers across the wider West Midlands region.
The company’s electric propulsion manufacturing centre in Wolverhampton is now producing battery packs and electric drive units alongside internal combustion engines, supporting JLR’s broader transition towards electrified mobility.
The launch follows a period of financial and operational pressure for the Coventry-based carmaker. JLR reported a first-quarter profit of £66 million after a fire at a key Norwegian supplier, while a cyber attack last year disrupted production for more than a month.
JLR is also continuing its restructuring programme and has confirmed that fewer than 300 roles will be cut as it manages new product launches alongside geopolitical, inflationary and regulatory pressures.
The introduction of the Range Rover Electric represents a significant milestone for JLR as it balances operational challenges with continued investment in electric vehicles, manufacturing capabilities and workforce skills.
