Algeria has begun implementing its national artificial intelligence strategy following the first coordination meeting between representatives of government ministries and national institutions.
The meeting, held on August 5, 2026, was chaired by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari and focused on establishing strategic priorities and a joint roadmap for expanding the use of artificial intelligence across public services while strengthening the country’s technological sovereignty.
A key focus of the roadmap is the development of sovereign, open-source government AI models designed to support public-sector applications. Algeria also plans to expand access to high-performance computing through national computing centres, allowing research institutions and startups to develop and train AI models locally.
The strategy places significant emphasis on building national AI capabilities through intensive training programmes developed in partnership with universities and research institutions. Areas of focus will include data analytics and generative artificial intelligence.
Algeria also plans to establish a dedicated scientific research centre and specialised research units to strengthen AI research and help translate academic developments into industrial applications.
Data sovereignty is another major priority, with the government seeking to ensure that administrative and public-sector data is securely processed and stored within national data centres. Authorities also highlighted the need for ethical and reliable deployment of AI technologies.
A joint monitoring committee has been established to oversee implementation of the roadmap according to a defined timeline.
The initiative marks a shift from developing Algeria’s national AI strategy toward putting it into practical use, with the government targeting AI-enabled public services, stronger local capabilities and a more digitally enabled public administration.
