Meta Platforms has unveiled a major upgrade to its Meta AI assistant, introducing autonomous task automation, calendar integration and advanced productivity features as the company intensifies competition with OpenAI, Google and Anthropic in the rapidly evolving AI market.
The update marks a significant shift in Meta’s AI strategy. While the company has traditionally focused on social experiences and entertainment across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now positioning Meta AI as a “personal superintelligence” capable of understanding users’ context, anticipating their needs and executing multi-step tasks with minimal human intervention.
Powered by the newly introduced Muse Spark 1.1 architecture, Meta AI now moves beyond reactive conversations to perform autonomous actions. New capabilities include automated daily briefings that integrate with users’ calendars, recurring background tasks such as generating weekly meal plans or monitoring product availability, steerable deep research that produces structured reports while allowing users to adjust outputs in real time, and planning tools for shopping, travel, events and project management.
Meta also announced Seller, a standalone iPhone application designed for Facebook Marketplace merchants. The app uses Meta AI to automatically generate product titles, descriptions and pricing recommendations from uploaded images while consolidating customer conversations into a single inbox, further expanding AI capabilities across Meta’s commerce ecosystem.
The rollout comes as competition among major AI companies accelerates, with OpenAI, Google and Anthropic continuing to expand enterprise and consumer AI offerings. Meta said users will retain control over their data through privacy features, including memory management tools and an Incognito Mode that prevents conversations from being stored or used for personalisation. The new capabilities are initially rolling out in selected markets through the Meta AI app and web platform, with broader integration across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger expected in the coming weeks.
