The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has called for stronger collaboration among African countries to ensure the continent speaks with one voice in shaping global telecommunications and digital economy policies ahead of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-26) in Doha, Qatar.
Speaking during the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Conference Preparatory Committee in Abuja, NCC Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Dr. Aminu Maida said the meeting provides a critical platform for developing Africa’s common positions on key global telecommunications issues.
Welcoming delegates from across the continent, Maida described the preparatory committee as essential for building consensus on policies that will shape the future of telecommunications, digital transformation and Africa’s growing digital economy.
He emphasized the importance of deeper regional cooperation on issues including spectrum harmonization, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital trust, data protection and universal access, while encouraging greater African participation in international technical and regulatory forums.
The meeting will review ATU activities from 2023 to 2026, develop recommendations for the ATU Conference of Plenipotentiaries and strengthen Africa’s preparedness for PP-26, reinforcing the continent’s influence in global ICT policymaking
