Tanzania Community Networks Company Ltd has taken a major step toward advancing digital inclusion in Africa through the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korean telecommunications company INNONET. The partnership aims to accelerate the deployment of Television White Space (TVWS) connectivity solutions across East Africa, leveraging innovative wireless technologies to expand internet access in underserved and remote communities.
The agreement, signed by INNONET Chief Executive Officer Dr. Hosang Yoo and Tanzania Community Networks Company Ltd founder Dr. Jabhera Matogoro, builds on the success of a pioneering TV White Space pilot project implemented in Kondoa District, Dodoma. The pilot successfully connected more than ten schools and community sites, demonstrating the potential of TVWS technology to deliver affordable and reliable internet access in areas where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited or economically challenging to deploy.
Following the encouraging results achieved in Tanzania, the initiative is now preparing for expansion into Kenya. The next phase will focus on connecting additional schools, students, and communities, helping to bridge digital access gaps and create new opportunities for learning, innovation, and economic participation. Kenya’s supportive regulatory environment for Television White Space technology and dynamic spectrum access solutions has positioned the country as a strategic destination for scaling the project.
As a university-affiliated technology startup originating from the University of Dodoma, Tanzania Community Networks Company Ltd continues to champion innovative approaches to connectivity across the continent. Beyond TV White Space deployment, the organization is exploring the integration of next-generation satellite technologies to complement terrestrial networks and improve connectivity in some of Africa’s most remote and difficult-to-reach regions.
The partnership represents more than a technology deployment initiative; it is a significant contribution to community-driven digital transformation. By expanding affordable internet access, the collaboration is expected to support education, entrepreneurship, healthcare delivery, and broader socioeconomic development. As Africa continues its digital transformation journey, initiatives such as this demonstrate how innovative partnerships and emerging technologies can play a crucial role in closing the connectivity gap and creating more inclusive digital opportunities for communities across the region.
