Morocco’s small and medium-sized enterprises are demonstrating strong confidence in the future, with 87% expressing optimism about their business outlook over the next 12 months, according to the latest Mastercard SME Confidence Index. The findings highlight a business community that remains resilient despite economic challenges and is increasingly focused on growth, innovation, and long-term sustainability. This confidence is being supported by a growing domestic market, political stability, and a clear commitment to strengthening business capabilities.

Digital transformation is emerging as a key driver of this optimism. The study found that 78% of Moroccan SMEs believe digital and online payments are critical to helping their businesses grow faster and more efficiently. As commerce becomes increasingly digital, businesses are recognizing the importance of adopting modern payment technologies that improve customer experiences, streamline operations, and unlock new opportunities in both local and international markets.

The research also reveals a strong growth mindset among entrepreneurs across Morocco. Nearly half of SMEs identified maintaining and expanding their businesses as their top priority, while 47% are already pursuing opportunities in new markets. This reflects a shift toward more proactive business strategies, with entrepreneurs investing in the tools, systems, and capabilities required to compete in an increasingly connected and digital economy.

Beyond payments, Moroccan SMEs are prioritizing cybersecurity, workforce development, and access to business advisory support. More than 60% of respondents identified secure payment processing and simple payment solutions as major growth enablers, while many emphasized the importance of training, upskilling teams, and gaining access to mentorship networks. These priorities demonstrate that businesses are taking a holistic approach to growth by combining technology adoption with talent development and strategic guidance.

Mastercard continues to play a key role in supporting this transformation through partnerships aimed at accelerating financial inclusion, payment innovation, and digital adoption. Collaborations with institutions such as Banque Centrale Populaire, VPS, and Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy are helping businesses and artisans access digital tools, secure payment technologies, training opportunities, and broader market access. As Moroccan SMEs continue to embrace digital innovation and strengthen their capabilities, they are positioning themselves as a powerful force in driving economic growth, entrepreneurship, and the country’s digital future.
