Ngabwe District in Zambia’s Central Province has taken a historic step forward in bridging the digital divide with the commissioning of a new communication tower in Chief Munkumbwe’s Chiefdom, Lufubu Constituency. The launch, which took place on 7 September 2025, was officiated by the Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati MP. This milestone project reflects Zambia’s continued efforts to advance digital connectivity, drive inclusion, and empower communities with better access to essential services.
The newly launched tower is expected to directly impact 999 households, benefiting approximately 5,500 residents. It will provide much-needed network coverage and open access to opportunities that rely heavily on digital connectivity, including mobile money services, access to e-learning platforms, fertilizer purchases for farmers, and improved healthcare communication. By addressing these fundamental needs, the initiative contributes not only to improving daily life but also to creating long-term economic and social opportunities for the people of Ngabwe.
This development is part of a larger government programme aimed at rolling out 163 towers nationwide, a critical step in Zambia’s digital transformation agenda. Minister Mutati underscored the government’s strong commitment to prioritizing Ngabwe’s growth as a new district, announcing that three additional towers will be built to expand network coverage even further. He emphasized that access to reliable connectivity is no longer a luxury but a necessity for education, business, agriculture, and healthcare delivery.
Stakeholders including Zamtel, ZICTA, Lusaka Telecom Solutions, and the local council highlighted the broader benefits of the tower. Beyond network access, the project will play a key role in enhancing financial inclusion, promoting research and education opportunities, and empowering rural businesses and farmers. ZICTA confirmed that the tower forms part of Phase 3 of its infrastructure programme, which involves constructing 51 new towers and upgrading existing sites from 2G to 4G, ensuring broader reach and faster services for Zambians across the country.
Community leaders, including the District Commissioner, Council Chairperson, and the local Member of Parliament, expressed gratitude for this transformative project. They called upon residents to safeguard the tower and actively support government initiatives designed to spur development. Additionally, Lusaka Telecom Solutions noted that young subcontractors and graduates were directly involved in the project, contributing to skills transfer, job creation, and empowering the youth to play an active role in Zambia’s digital future.
Healthcare leaders also welcomed the development, with Dr. K. Mwila, Hospital In-Charge, stressing the tower’s life-saving potential in improving consultations, referrals, and even communication during theatre operations. By enabling reliable and timely access to medical advice and emergency responses, the tower strengthens the local healthcare system and ensures better outcomes for patients. With this launch, Ngabwe has positioned itself on a path towards sustainable growth, powered by digital inclusion, education, healthcare advancement, and economic opportunities.
