RwandAir has taken another bold step in strengthening its position as a leading African carrier with the expansion of its fleet in August through the addition of two leased Boeing 737-800 aircraft. With the new aircraft, RwandAir’s fleet has grown to 15, comprising Airbus A330s, Boeing 737s, and a De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Dash-8. Importantly, the airline is also expecting the delivery of its second wide-body Airbus A330-200 in Q4, which will significantly enhance its long-haul operations and improve connectivity between Rwanda and global destinations. This expansion highlights RwandAir’s ambition to not only strengthen regional presence but also expand international routes to meet growing demand.
The airline’s growth trajectory comes after a challenging period marked by technical disruptions that reduced the number of aircraft available for service. These disruptions strained operations, but with the resolution of these issues and the addition of new aircraft, RwandAir is poised to improve operational reliability. Commenting on the milestone, RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo noted that the airline is pleased to have addressed recent operational challenges and is now ready to deliver an even better travel experience. According to her, the expanded fleet will not only support reliability but also enable RwandAir to strengthen its schedule integrity and meet passenger expectations with improved service delivery.
Industry observers, including Planespotters.net, have indicated that only 11 of RwandAir’s aircraft are currently active, with four parked. However, the addition of new aircraft signals a deliberate and strategic effort by the airline to rebuild resilience and ensure growth momentum. This approach reflects RwandAir’s broader vision of becoming one of Africa’s most dependable and competitive carriers.
