Somalia has taken a bold step forward in its digital transformation journey with the launch of a new e-visa portal, designed to simplify international travel and enhance border security. Officially launched on Sunday, August 24, 2025, the platform eliminates the need for embassy visits or in-person paperwork, providing travellers with a seamless, digitised visa application process. This milestone not only enhances convenience but also underscores Somalia’s commitment to leveraging technology to strengthen governance and service delivery.

The initiative was developed with the support of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), marking a collaborative effort to streamline immigration systems and foster global confidence. By digitising verification and screening processes, Somalia is making travel safer for both visitors and the nation. The new e-visa system is set to encourage more tourism, business engagements, and diaspora connections, all under a framework that balances openness with robust security measures.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, while speaking at the launch in Mogadishu, emphasised the significance of the portal in signalling Somalia’s readiness to engage globally. His remarks highlighted a vision of welcoming international travellers with confidence and transparency, ensuring that the nation remains both secure and inviting. The move is a strategic response to the growing demand for efficient and reliable border control systems in a rapidly digitising world.

This development builds on Somalia’s growing list of digital infrastructure achievements. In July 2025, the Central Bank of Somalia introduced SOMQR, a unified QR code system to streamline mobile payments across financial institutions. Just a month prior, the country unveiled its first NFC-enabled wearable payment device, allowing contactless transactions with ease. Together, these initiatives paint a clear picture of a country actively embedding technology into its social, financial, and now immigration frameworks.

By extending digital-first innovation to the travel sector, Somalia is positioning itself as a forward-looking nation that sees technology as central to its growth. The e-visa platform is not just a tool for convenience; it is a strategic enabler of economic opportunity, facilitating smoother travel experiences for investors, entrepreneurs, and the wider Somali diaspora eager to reconnect with the country. The focus is clear—reduce barriers while strengthening oversight to support both development and security.

Ultimately, the e-visa portal signals more than just an administrative upgrade—it is a testament to Somalia’s broader ambition to modernise its public services and integrate into the global economy. As the system gains traction, it is expected to make travel to Somalia more predictable, secure, and appealing, setting a new standard for how technology can reshape national progress.
