Vodacom South Africa and SmartOps Fleet have partnered with organisations across the technology, financial services, automotive and e-hailing sectors to launch an integrated programme aimed at expanding participation in South Africa’s growing e-hailing economy.

The programme aims to introduce up to 55,000 vehicles over the next nine to 12 months, potentially supporting up to 110,000 driver opportunities based on two drivers per vehicle. Electric vehicles are targeted to make up 66% of the planned fleet.

Launched during Transport Month, the programme brings together vehicle ownership, financing, technology and professional fleet management to create a pathway for qualifying individuals to participate in the e-hailing economy through vehicle ownership.

Vodacom provides connectivity and fintech capabilities, while SmartOps Fleet manages vehicles, drivers, maintenance, insurance, tracking and day-to-day e-hailing operations. Other partners include Nedbank MFC, Motus, Tiger Wheel & Tyre, Tyres & More, Renault, Dongfeng, Fidelity Services Group and Thiba Ingozi.

Qualifying individual investors earning a minimum gross income of R15,300 per month, alongside institutional investors, can finance approved vehicles through Nedbank MFC and lease them to SmartOps Fleet for managed e-hailing operations. Investors retain vehicle ownership and can earn up to 40% monthly commission, while SmartOps Fleet manages the vehicle’s operational requirements.

The programme is also designed to support safer and more connected operations through vehicle tracking, dash cameras, panic buttons and safety technology, while increasing the adoption of electric vehicles across South Africa’s e-hailing sector.
