MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita has been elected to the GSMA Board of Directors for the 2027–2028 term, extending his role in shaping the direction of the global mobile industry.

The GSMA Board comprises 26 senior representatives from mobile operators around the world, including multinational groups and smaller independent operators. The Board provides strategic direction to the GSMA as it works to advance the mobile industry and expand access to connectivity.

Mupita joined the GSMA Board for the 2025–2026 term and has served as Deputy Chair since April 2025. During the new term, he will continue supporting the African agenda, with a focus on closing usage and coverage gaps, increasing investment and advancing a climate-smart future.

His continued role comes as artificial intelligence increasingly influences the telecommunications industry, while significant portions of the Global South remain unconnected. Mupita has highlighted the importance of collaboration between mobile operators, the wider technology ecosystem and policymakers in expanding access to digital opportunities.

Mupita has served as MTN Group President and CEO since September 2020. He previously served as Group Chief Financial Officer from April 2017 and led Old Mutual Emerging Markets across 19 countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia.

MTN’s contribution to the GSMA Board during the 2027–2028 term will be guided by its Ambition 2030 strategy, which focuses on delivering digital solutions that support Africa’s progress.
