Huawei and Qualcomm have announced a multi-year, broad patent license agreement covering cross licences to their respective patent portfolios across several technology fields, including 5G, computing, artificial intelligence and networking.

The agreement also includes Qualcomm’s purchase of certain Huawei U.S. patents covering compute, AI, networking and other technologies. The transaction is expected to close following receipt of the necessary regulatory approvals.

The companies said the agreement reflects their shared commitment to intellectual property rights and licensing practices consistent with fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles.

Huawei Chief Intellectual Property Officer Alan Fan said the agreement recognises the company’s continued investment in fundamental research and development and its contributions to mobile communications, including 4G and 5G standards.

Qualcomm Technology Licensing Executive Vice President and General Manager John Han said the agreement reflects recognition of Qualcomm’s investments in foundational wireless technologies and 5G technology, while also acknowledging Huawei’s continued innovation and intellectual property across 5G and other technology fields.
