Spotify is introducing a new AI Persona label to help listeners identify artist profiles whose identities are generated by artificial intelligence.
The feature is designed to address growing concerns around transparency on music streaming platforms, particularly when listeners encounter artist profiles that appear to represent real people but are actually synthetic personas.
Starting in mid-September, the AI Persona badge will appear on artist profiles, banner and About sections, Search results and track rows across playlists. Tapping the badge will provide additional context on whether the artist voluntarily disclosed its AI identity or whether Spotify identified the profile through its own review process.
Spotify will also exclude music from AI Personas from personalized recommendations by default. This means such tracks will not automatically appear in Discover Weekly or algorithmic playlists unless listeners deliberately follow the associated profiles.
From August 11, artists will be able to disclose their AI Persona status through Spotify for Artists. Spotify will also use human reviewers and AI tools to identify profiles that do not disclose their synthetic identity.
Profiles identified by Spotify will be notified and given an opportunity to dispute the classification or confirm that the label is accurate. The platform also plans to introduce listener reporting for suspected AI Personas in the coming months.
The initiative builds on other identity and authenticity measures introduced by Spotify, including Verified by Spotify and Artist Profile Protection, which are designed to establish artist identity and prevent music from being incorrectly attributed.
Spotify’s AI Persona rollout reflects the growing challenge facing music platforms as AI-generated artists and content become more common, placing greater emphasis on transparency around who, or what, is behind the music listeners discover.
