Uganda Airlines has placed an order for four Boeing 737-8 aircraft and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as it accelerates the expansion and modernization of its fleet. The agreement marks the national carrier’s first direct aircraft purchase from Boeing.
The airline said the new aircraft will support growing passenger demand across its regional and international network while strengthening Entebbe International Airport’s position as a regional aviation hub.
The Boeing 737-8 aircraft will be deployed on regional routes across Africa as well as services to the Middle East and India, while the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners will operate long-haul routes connecting Uganda to destinations in the Middle East, Asia and Europe. According to Boeing, the new aircraft will reduce fuel consumption by between 20% and 25% compared to the aircraft they replace, improving operational efficiency and sustainability.
Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Ato Girma Wake described the agreement as a defining milestone for the airline, saying the investment will strengthen Uganda’s connectivity, support trade, tourism, investment and cargo development, while helping position Entebbe as a strategic aviation hub. He added that the partnership with Boeing also includes collaboration on technical excellence, training and capacity building to support the airline’s long-term growth.
Boeing welcomed Uganda Airlines as a new direct customer, noting that the 737-8 and 787-9 offer the efficiency, range and versatility needed to strengthen and expand the airline’s network. Uganda Airlines currently serves 17 destinations across 13 countries from its hub at Entebbe International Airport.
