MTN Uganda has completed the digital transformation of Mpanga Market in Fort Portal, introducing new connectivity, security and digital financial services aimed at improving the trading environment for merchants and shoppers.

The upgraded market was officially handed over to its leadership during a ceremony led by Joseph Bogera, MTN Uganda’s General Manager for Sales & Distribution. The event was officiated by Uganda’s Minister of Local Government, Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, and attended by Fort Portal City leaders, traders and members of the local community.

As part of the upgrade, the market has been equipped with public Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance cameras and a public address system to enhance connectivity, strengthen security and improve communication across the market.

MTN Uganda also onboarded traders onto its MTN MoMo Merchant platform to encourage digital payments and financial inclusion. To support the transition to cashless transactions, the company provided 10 merchants with UGX 100,000 each in float.

According to MTN Uganda, the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to expanding digital inclusion by combining connectivity, digital financial services and community investments that empower businesses and support local economic growth.

The company noted that the transformation extends beyond infrastructure, aiming to create long-term opportunities for traders and the communities that depend on the market every day.
