Microsoft and 3M have announced a strategic partnership to strengthen AI data centre infrastructure while accelerating enterprise AI transformation, combining cloud innovation with advanced materials science to support the next generation of artificial intelligence workloads.
The collaboration brings together Microsoft’s hyperscale cloud and AI capabilities with 3M’s expertise in materials science and precision manufacturing. As AI adoption continues to drive demand for faster, more reliable and scalable infrastructure, the partnership aims to improve both the physical foundation of AI data centres and the way enterprises leverage AI across their operations.
A key milestone in the partnership is Microsoft’s adoption of 3M’s Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology within Azure data centres. Microsoft becomes the first announced hyperscale cloud provider to deploy the technology, which is designed to improve fibre optic connectivity through faster installation, greater reliability and easier maintenance. The companies believe the solution can accelerate network deployment while supporting the performance requirements of modern AI infrastructure.
Beyond infrastructure, 3M will integrate Microsoft’s AI technologies across customer service, finance, sales and marketing to streamline operations and improve productivity. Initial projects include AI-powered customer order management, helping automate routine processes while maintaining human oversight to improve operational efficiency, decision-making and customer experience.
