Eskom and Huawei have strengthened their collaboration with the launch of the Eskom & Huawei Modernisation Centre, a strategic initiative aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of South Africa’s power sector. Located at the Eskom Academy of Learning, the new facility represents a significant investment in technology, innovation, and workforce development, providing a dedicated environment where digital skills, modern energy technologies, and smart grid capabilities can be developed to support the future of the country’s electricity infrastructure. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to modernising energy systems while preparing South Africa for the next generation of digital utility operations.

A key component of the Modernisation Centre is its state-of-the-art smart classroom, equipped with Huawei’s advanced smart education technologies. The facility will deliver specialised training programmes for Eskom employees as well as South African youth, focusing on critical areas including power ICT, smart grid technologies, cybersecurity, digital operations, and modern maintenance practices. By equipping current and future professionals with practical knowledge and hands-on experience, the centre aims to strengthen the country’s digital energy talent pipeline while ensuring that the workforce is prepared to manage increasingly intelligent and technology-driven electricity networks.

Beyond education and skills development, the partnership is focused on advancing the digitalisation of Eskom’s operational infrastructure. Huawei will contribute its expertise in ICT and digital energy technologies to help Eskom modernise grid operations, improve operational efficiency, enhance cybersecurity, and support the development of smarter, safer, and more resilient electricity systems. Through the adoption of advanced digital solutions, the collaboration seeks to optimise grid dispatching, improve fault detection and response, strengthen maintenance processes, and enhance the overall reliability of electricity supply for homes, businesses, and industries across South Africa.

The Modernisation Centre also serves as a hub for innovation, showcasing practical demonstrations of emerging technologies that will shape the future of energy management. These include smart substations, intelligent electricity distribution systems, digital energy solutions, cybersecurity platforms, and integrated software and hardware designed to support real-time learning and operational excellence. By combining advanced technologies with practical training and collaborative research, Eskom and Huawei are creating an ecosystem where innovation can be tested, refined, and deployed to address the evolving needs of South Africa’s energy sector.

As South Africa continues to modernise its electricity infrastructure and strengthen energy security, initiatives such as the Eskom & Huawei Modernisation Centre demonstrate the growing role of strategic partnerships in driving digital transformation. By investing in technology, workforce capability, cybersecurity, and intelligent energy systems, both organisations are laying the foundation for a more efficient, resilient, and sustainable power sector. The collaboration not only supports Eskom’s long-term modernisation strategy but also contributes to South Africa’s broader digital economy ambitions by developing local expertise, accelerating innovation, and building smarter energy infrastructure capable of meeting future demand.
