Google has announced a transformative initiative aimed at advancing higher education and AI literacy across Africa by providing university students with free access to its premium AI subscription, Google AI Pro, for 12 months. This program, available to eligible students aged 18 and above in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, will empower learners to explore, create, and innovate using Google’s most advanced AI technologies.
Through Gemini 2.5 Pro, Google’s most capable AI model, students will gain hands-on experience with generative AI tools designed to enhance their studies, research, and creative projects. The initiative seeks to bridge the digital divide by equipping Africa’s next generation of leaders, innovators, and thinkers with essential AI skills that will prepare them for a rapidly evolving job market where AI competence is increasingly critical.
According to Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, this initiative underscores Google’s commitment to democratizing technology and expanding opportunity. “By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future,” he stated. The move is expected to strengthen Africa’s position in the global digital economy and foster innovation across sectors.
The Google AI Pro plan includes a wide range of advanced features to boost academic performance and creativity. With Guided Learning, students can summarize research papers, debug code, and get step-by-step explanations for complex concepts. Deep Research allows users to generate comprehensive reports from hundreds of sources in minutes, while NotebookLM helps them organize and connect ideas effortlessly. Veo 3 enables the creation of high-quality videos from text or image prompts, supporting multimedia projects and presentations. The subscription also offers 2 TB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos—ensuring sufficient space for research data, assignments, and creative content.
Eligible university students can activate their free 12-month subscription by verifying their student status on gemini.google/students between October 7 and December 9, 2025.
