Standard Bank Group has announced significant leadership changes that reflect its deep succession pipeline and commitment to strengthening internal leadership capacity. David Hodnett has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited (SBSA), bringing with him over 30 years of leadership experience and a strong track record within the financial services sector. His extensive institutional knowledge, gained through serving as the Group’s Chief Risk Officer (CRO) and leading its Corporate Affairs portfolio, positions him to drive the bank’s strategic vision in South Africa.
To ensure continuity in leadership, Thabani Ndwandwe will succeed Hodnett as the Group Chief Risk Officer while retaining his SBSA CRO responsibilities. Ndwandwe, who joined the Group in 2004, has spent two decades mastering risk management portfolios across multiple jurisdictions. His appointment not only strengthens the Group’s leadership team but also reinforces its capacity to manage risks effectively in a dynamic financial environment. He will also join the Group Leadership Council, underscoring the importance of his new role.
The leadership reshuffle also confirms the permanent appointment of Lungisa Fuzile as Chief Executive Officer for Africa Regions and Offshore, following his time in an interim capacity. This transition highlights the Group’s confidence in Fuzile’s proven leadership abilities and his strong track record of delivering growth and stability in key markets. His appointment cements Standard Bank’s focus on strengthening its footprint across Africa while ensuring consistent strategic leadership.
Sim Tshabalala, CEO of Standard Bank Group, emphasized that these appointments reflect the institution’s strong succession planning and leadership development culture. He highlighted David Hodnett’s vast expertise in South Africa’s financial sector, Thabani Ndwandwe’s exemplary leadership across risk portfolios, and Lungisa Fuzile’s record of accomplishment in driving regional performance as key factors in these strategic decisions.
These appointments demonstrate Standard Bank’s ability to balance leadership continuity with innovation, ensuring that the Group continues to execute its strategy while building resilience and capacity for the future. The leadership team’s combined expertise will be instrumental in driving the Group’s mission to be a leading financial services provider in Africa while delivering sustainable value to stakeholders.
The appointments of David Hodnett and Thabani Ndwandwe are subject to regulatory approval. However, once effective, they will further consolidate Standard Bank’s leadership strength and its ongoing commitment to fostering trusted leadership across all levels of the Group.
