Rwanda has marked a groundbreaking milestone by successfully launching Africa’s first self-flying electric air taxi, showcasing the country’s bold commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility. The historic demonstration took place during the Aviation Africa Summit 2025 in Kigali, presided over by President Paul Kagame. The Chinese-built EHang EH216-S, a fully electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, completed its pilotless flight, positioning Rwanda as a continental pioneer in the future of aviation and urban mobility.
The two-seat aircraft, powered by advanced autonomous navigation systems, offers more than just a technological achievement—it provides a vision for connected, efficient, and sustainable cities. Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure, Jimmy Gasore, emphasized that this milestone reflects the country’s ambition to ease urban transport challenges, particularly traffic congestion. By taking mobility into the skies, the air taxis promise faster travel times, reduced reliance on congested roads, and improved overall urban mobility.
This development aligns with Kigali’s broader vision of building smarter, greener, and technology-driven cities. CRBC’s director general in Rwanda, Huang Qilin, hailed the collaboration as proof of their joint commitment to exploring the potential of Africa’s low-altitude economy. The partnership also highlights Rwanda’s proactive approach to leveraging global expertise to drive local transformation.
Rwanda has already established a track record of embracing innovative transport solutions, being one of the first countries in the world to deploy drone delivery services for medical supplies. The government has also been investing heavily in e-mobility infrastructure, including charging stations and policies supporting electric buses and motorcycles. This latest achievement reinforces Rwanda’s position as a fast-growing hub for innovation, technology, and sustainability on the African continent.
