Ghana is set to become Africa’s first AI-powered agricultural hub following a landmark $100 million investment from Degas, a global agri-tech firm. The announcement came after a meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and Degas CEO Doga Makiura in Yokohama, Japan. This strategic partnership underscores Ghana’s growing appeal as an innovation-driven investment destination and marks a major milestone in modernizing its agricultural sector.

Over the next four years, the investment will focus on deploying AI-powered satellite imagery and precision farming technologies to empower smallholder farmers, who play a central role in Ghana’s food production systems. Degas brings a proven model that combines inputs, credit, and training, which has previously doubled farmer incomes while maintaining a repayment rate of 95%. With the ability to remotely monitor farms at scale, the initiative will optimize resource use, predict yields more accurately, and enhance efficiency across the entire value chain from farm to market.

This investment aligns with Ghana’s vision for technology-enabled agriculture, as highlighted by President Mahama, who described the move as a strong vote of confidence in the country’s integrated agricultural agenda. By harnessing artificial intelligence, Ghana aims to bolster food security, enhance productivity, and reduce vulnerabilities in agricultural output, ensuring a more sustainable and resilient farming ecosystem.

Beyond agricultural transformation, the initiative is expected to create thousands of new jobs for Ghana’s youth, providing opportunities in technology, data analytics, and agribusiness. It positions Ghana at the forefront of Africa’s agricultural innovation and reinforces the country’s role in shaping the future of food security through cutting-edge technology. This partnership represents not only a boost to the farming sector but also a catalyst for broader socio-economic growth.
