As Malawi prepares for elections next month, the (MEC) Malawi Electoral Commission has introduced a highly accessible solution to simplify voter information verification through USSD technology. This innovation enables citizens to confirm critical details such as their registration status and voting station number without requiring internet connectivity, ensuring that the process is available to all, regardless of device type or digital access.

The USSD platform works like a standard text messaging service, making it familiar and easy to use for every voter. Because it operates without internet access, it is compatible with any mobile phone, from the simplest cell phones to the latest smartphones. This approach removes digital barriers and ensures that all citizens, including those in rural areas with limited connectivity, can easily verify their voting information.

A key advantage of this system is its inclusivity and privacy protection. Since the platform does not store data on the device, any phone can be used to complete the process, even if the individual does not own one personally. This means that a single phone can serve an entire household or even a community, creating a highly inclusive system that guarantees no voter is left behind. Additionally, no personal data is captured or retained during the verification process, safeguarding user privacy and security.

Sangwani Mwafulirwa, Director of Media and Public Relations of the Malawi Electoral Commission, highlighted that the system does not require phone ownership verification. The USSD service solely provides access to voter details and polling station information, without tracking or saving user data. This initiative is a clear step toward strengthening democratic participation by making voter information verification simple, secure, and universally accessible.
