Zambia has embarked on a significant initiative to enhance its healthcare system by implementing Digital Health Systems in hospitals nationwide. This groundbreaking project aims to digitize health services, improve drug availability, and ensure that healthcare facilities can offer efficient and effective care through modern technology.

Felix Mutati, Zambia’s Minister of Science and Technology, announced the launch of this transformative project in Gwembe, Southern Province. The new digital tools will enable hospitals to reach a broader population and provide better healthcare services. This advancement marks a major step forward in Zambia’s efforts to modernize its healthcare sector.

Minister Mutati highlighted the collaboration between his ministry and the Ministry of Health to track and trace pharmaceuticals from procurement to patient use. This initiative is expected to address and mitigate the issue of drug pilferage, ensuring that medications reach those who need them most.

Minister of Health Elijah Muchina also addressed the issue of pharmaceutical theft, emphasizing that such criminal activities deprive Zambians of essential medicines. His comments underscore the government’s commitment to safeguarding healthcare resources and improving the overall quality of health services.

In addition to the Digital Health Systems Project, the Zambian government is seeking funding to equip all healthcare facilities with solar electricity. This initiative aims to address the current power disruptions caused by the country’s heavy reliance on hydroelectric power from Lake Kariba.

These efforts reflect Zambia’s dedication to advancing its healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that its citizens have access to reliable and modern medical services.
