DOB Equity, a private equity fund with bases in Nairobi and the Netherlands, has appointed Karen Serem Waithaka as its new Chief Executive Officer. Karen brings over 15 years of expertise in the financial services sector to her new role, stepping into the leadership position at a pivotal moment for the fund. This appointment follows recent significant changes in leadership and challenges within DOB Equity’s portfolio companies.

Karen Serem Waithaka joins DOB Equity from her previous role as Chief Investment Officer at Catalyst Fund, where she focused on pre-seed startup investments. Her educational background includes a Master’s Degree in Finance from the University of New South Wales and a BSc in Actuarial Science from Curtin University of Technology. Her experience and academic credentials position her well to lead DOB Equity through its current phase of transformation.

Karen succeeds Saskia van der Mast and Hayo Afman, who stepped down after 19 and 9 years of service, respectively. Her appointment comes at a time when DOB Equity is dealing with substantial challenges in its portfolio. The fund has experienced notable setbacks, including the shutdowns of Sendy and Copia, and difficulties faced by Twiga Foods among others.
