Kenya is witnessing a significant surge in interest in artificial intelligence (AI), ranking fourth in Africa and 13th globally in AI-related searches this year. This uptick in curiosity underscores a growing awareness and engagement with AI technology across the country.
Searches for ‘what is AI’ and ‘how to use AI’ in Kenya have increased by 60 percent and 90 percent, respectively, indicating a strong desire among Kenyans to understand and harness the potential of AI in their daily lives and careers. This trend is further reflected in the dramatic rise of searches for ‘AI-generated images,’ ‘AI logo maker,’ and ‘AI text chat generator,’ which have surged by 5,000 percent.
Google’s country director for East Africa, Agnes Gathaiya, emphasizes the transformative potential of AI in creating opportunities for innovation, social progress, and economic growth. The increased interest in AI among Kenyans is a clear sign that the population is eager to leverage this technology to boost creativity, enhance skills, and drive societal development.
In addition to general AI interest, there has been a notable rise in searches related to cybersecurity and AI, which have doubled by 110 percent. This trend highlights a growing concern for digital security and the potential role AI can play in protecting data and systems in Kenya. Moreover, searches linking AI with medicine and healthcare have risen by 50 percent, reflecting the country’s interest in exploring AI’s potential in advancing scientific and medical fields.
Kenya’s emergence as a regional tech hub is evident, with AI initiatives being applied across various sectors, including agriculture, health, education, fintech, and transport. These developments are positioning Kenya as a leader in AI adoption in East Africa.
The Kenyan government’s proactive stance on AI, demonstrated by the commissioning of the Blockchain and AI Taskforce in 2018, underscores the strategic importance of AI in the country’s future. This initiative aims to provide clear directions on how best to utilize AI to foster innovation and sustainable growth in Kenya.
