The GSMA, World Bank, and other global institutions have launched a groundbreaking coalition aimed at enhancing handset affordability for low-income populations worldwide. This alliance is set to tackle the barriers that hinder access to digital services, particularly in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
The coalition’s primary goal is to make smartphones more accessible, potentially allowing an additional 270 million Africans to afford them if priced around $20. This initiative could narrow the digital usage gap by 23%, empowering communities with greater access to vital services and economic opportunities.
Mobile connectivity remains the cornerstone for internet access in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), serving as the primary means for broadband connections. However, significant challenges such as handset affordability, digital literacy, and safety concerns prevent billions from fully utilizing these resources.
Members of the coalition, including major mobile operators, vendors, and international organizations like the ITU and WEF Edison Alliance, will collaborate on innovative solutions. These efforts aim to ‘de-risk’ financing mechanisms and expand access to affordable internet-enabled devices, complementing existing initiatives supported by the World Bank Group.
Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA, highlighted the coalition’s commitment to bridging the usage gap by leveraging mobile technology. By fostering creative solutions and sharing insights among members, they aim to unlock new possibilities for individuals and communities worldwide.
Guangzhe Chen from the World Bank emphasized the critical role of affordable internet-connected devices in accelerating digitalization across developing countries. This coalition, aligned with global goals for broadband affordability, seeks to ensure universal connectivity and equitable access to digital opportunities.
