Orange, a global telecom services provider, has announced the expansion of its digital platform, Orange Smart Energies, to all energy providers across Africa. This initiative aims to democratize access to electricity by offering straightforward, prepaid access through solar kits and smart meters.
The newly opened Orange Smart Energies platform addresses the profitability challenges faced by African energy producers by significantly reducing the risk of non-payment. Utilizing IoT technology, the platform ensures secure client payments via mobile money, enhancing financial stability for energy providers.
Developed by Orange in 2021, Orange Smart Energies is now available in Africa and the Middle East, facilitating collaboration between telecommunications and energy sectors. This partnership model enables Orange to provide a digital service and distribution network that simplifies electricity access, even in remote areas.
“This universal platform supports both pay-as-you-go solar equipment and prepaid smart meters, making it unique in the market,” states Orange. Since its launch, the platform has been operational in 12 countries, benefiting over 300,000 families across Africa and the Middle East.
Jérôme Hénique, CEO of Orange Middle East and Africa, emphasizes the company’s commitment to leveraging digital technology for energy inclusion in Africa. “Making Orange Smart Energies available to all energy providers marks a significant milestone in our journey towards achieving universal access to energy throughout the region,” he comments.
Nat-Sy Missamou, senior vice president of Orange Energies for Africa and the Middle East, highlights the collaborative effort with energy producers to sustain their presence in African markets. “Our pay-as-you-go service utilizes a distribution model tailored to African conditions, leveraging existing digital and financial inclusion solutions,” Missamou explains.
