Ampersand and BYD have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on decarbonising Africa’s commercial motorbike transport system. This strategic partnership will see Ampersand, the leading EV energy tech company based in Kigali, purchase BYD’s high-tech battery cells to manufacture around 40,000 electric motorcycles by the end of 2026. The long-term goal is to electrify a substantial portion of Africa’s 30 million commercial motorbikes, driving sustainable growth across the continent.
By leveraging BYD’s cutting-edge lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells, known for their long lifespan, safety, and affordability, Ampersand is poised to rapidly scale its electric fleet and charging infrastructure. This expansion will support the increasing demand for commercial motorcycles in Africa’s growing cities, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution that aligns with the continent’s economic development.
Ampersand’s CEO, Josh Whale, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “This marks a major milestone as we lead the charge in providing sustainable, mass-market EV solutions.” BYD’s Sihai Zhang added, “Ampersand’s technology and customer insight make it the clear pioneer in the electrification of Africa’s transport system.”
The collaboration is set to revolutionize Africa’s transport sector, providing drivers with significant savings on fuel and maintenance—averaging 45% annually. This not only improves lives and livelihoods but also drives entrepreneurship and social mobility by making transportation more accessible and sustainable.
Electric two-wheelers will also contribute to cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions, aligning with global environmental goals.
