Vodacom is proud to announce its recent achievement of ISO 50001 certification for energy management, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability and climate action across Africa. This certification underscores Vodacom’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

Dejan Kastelic, Group Technology Officer for Vodacom Group, emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “Climate change poses one of the greatest challenges to our society, especially in Africa. ISO 50001 is instrumental in Vodacom Group’s journey to net zero and reinforces our commitment to sustainable energy management.”

ISO 50001 certification requires companies to implement top-down energy management techniques, set quantifiable energy performance goals, and continuously improve operational efficiency. Many ISO 50001-certified companies report significant energy reductions, with some achieving savings of up to 30%.

Kastelic highlighted Vodacom’s efforts in energy efficiency programs, including sourcing more efficient network equipment, reducing energy demand through lower-power technologies, and upgrading legacy equipment. These initiatives led to a 26% reduction in energy intensity from 2023 to 2024.

He added, “Energy efficiency is crucial for businesses to lower energy use, contain costs, and decarbonize operations. The greenest energy is the energy that is not used, making energy efficiency initiatives impactful for both large and small organizations.”

Vodacom’s commitment extends beyond operational efficiency to environmental stewardship. Power generation accounts for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in energy usage habits.

As an organization deeply rooted in Africa, Vodacom recognizes the impact of climate change on its customers and communities. Kastelic stressed, “Energy efficiency initiatives are critical to helping us decarbonize society and contribute to a sustainable future.”
