Kenya is set to revolutionize its digital landscape by utilizing over 70,000 power transformers as internet hotspots across the country. This innovative initiative, announced by the government in collaboration with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company, aims to provide widespread internet access through existing infrastructure, rather than laying new fibre optic cables.
According to Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and Digital Economy, the plan leverages Kenya Power’s extensive network of transformers. “Kenya Power has 74,000 transformers all over the country,” Owalo stated. “We will convert these transformers into Wi-Fi hotspots, significantly expanding internet accessibility.”
The government’s initial target was to establish 25,000 hotspots, but with the vast number of transformers available, this number is set to triple. Owalo highlighted the cost-effectiveness of this approach compared to traditional fibre deployment. “Rolling out fibre by digging trenches costs us approximately KSh2.3 million per km,” he explained. “Using this method, we will only spend KSh600,000 per kilometre.”
This initiative aims to bridge the digital divide by providing affordable internet access to more communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas. It will support economic growth, education, and innovation, fostering a more connected and digitally empowered society.
By repurposing existing infrastructure for internet connectivity, Kenya is poised to boost economic productivity and enhance social inclusion. The project is expected to create new opportunities for businesses and individuals, driving digital entrepreneurship and innovation.
This move aligns with Kenya’s vision for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), positioning the country as a leader in digital innovation in Africa. It underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development and economic transformation.
