Google for Startups has revealed the 24 startups selected for the 2024 edition of the Growth Academy: AI for Health initiative. The program aims to support high-potential businesses across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) that are leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize medical research and healthcare. Notable selections include Kenya’s Thalia Psychotherapy and TibuHealth, Nigeria’s Healthtracka, and South Africa’s Zoie Health, showcasing AI’s role in addressing healthcare challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The chosen startups highlight AI’s potential in addressing critical healthcare challenges in Africa. For instance, Thalia Psychotherapy’s AI-powered chatbot offers initial assessments and therapy sessions, bridging the gap in mental health support in regions facing a shortage of mental health professionals. TibuHealth provides affordable outpatient services through “minute clinics” in partner pharmacies, ensuring accessibility for underserved communities.

Dorothy Ooko, Head of Communications and Public Affairs, Google Africa, reiterated Google’s commitment to supporting innovative startups, especially those leveraging AI to tackle healthcare challenges. The Growth Academy: AI for Health program underscores this commitment, providing startups with the resources and support to drive innovation in healthcare.

Selected startups will undergo three months of rigorous training, mentorship, and networking as part of the program. Workshops will cover AI best practices, leadership development, responsible innovation, product design, and customer acquisition. Google experts from various domains will offer personalized mentorship and technical support to the participants.

Startups from 13 countries across EMEA are leveraging AI for diverse healthcare applications. From managing chronic diseases and assessing diabetic foot ulcers to predicting early-stage cancer and monitoring mental health via speech, these startups demonstrate AI’s versatility in improving patient care and medical research.

Google for Startups’ initiative empowers healthcare innovators to drive positive change in their communities. By providing training, mentorship, and access to resources, the program equips startups with the tools needed to make meaningful contributions to the future of healthcare in their regions.
