Kenya’s team participating in Huawei’s ICT Competition in Shenzhen, China, achieved remarkable success by securing victories in four award categories. The event, held from May 23–26, featured the highest number of Kenyan participants among the 16 teams from across the continent, showcasing Kenya’s talent on a global stage.
Kenya Network Teams 1 and 2 clinched the first prize, while Kenya Computing Team 1 secured the second prize. Additionally, Kenya Cloud Team 1 and 2 earned the third prize, and Kenya Cloud Team 2 received the prestigious Women in Tech Award. This achievement underscores the exceptional skills and dedication of Kenyan students in the ICT field.
The 2023-2024 ICT Competition circuit attracted over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 universities and colleges across 80+ countries and regions. With more than 160 teams and over 470 contestants reaching the global final in Shenzhen, the competition stands as the largest offline event since its inception in 2015, highlighting the growing importance of ICT education worldwide.
Esther Thaara Muoria, Principal Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Education, State Department for TVET, emphasized the significance of international competitions in fostering global excellence. “You are striving to not only be the best in your environment but to be the best in the globe,” she remarked, reflecting on the immense value such platforms provide to young innovators.
