Amazon’s AWS announced on Thursday its intention to allocate $10 billion for constructing two data center complexes in Mississippi, marking its latest expansion to meet the surging demand for cloud services, particularly as businesses increasingly embrace new artificial intelligence technologies.
The upsurge in AI development has led to a significant rise in cloud infrastructure usage, with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft’s Azure emerging as the top three global vendors expected to manage the majority of this traffic.
The plan for AWS’ expansion in Mississippi follows closely on the heels of its recent announcement of a $15 billion investment in Japan, along with Google’s decision to establish a $1 billion data center near London. Working alongside the Madison County Economic Development Authority (MCEDA), AWS will construct multiple data center units in two industrial parks within Madison County.
This move is anticipated to generate at least 1,000 new employment opportunities in the state, as outlined in Amazon’s official blog. Since 2010, Amazon has injected $2.3 billion into Mississippi to develop its infrastructure, encompassing the establishment of five fulfillment and sortation centers. This latest investment underscores Amazon’s ongoing commitment to expanding its data center network to meet the evolving needs of businesses and capitalize on the growing demand for cloud services worldwide.
