Botswana’s Minister of Communications and Innovation, David Tshere, has called for wider access to digital connectivity and economic opportunities in rural communities as the country marked World Post Day 2026 in Sekoma.
Speaking at the event under the theme “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities,” Tshere said postal services are evolving beyond traditional mail delivery to support e-commerce, financial services, logistics and digital government services.
He identified the new Sekoma Poso Mall as a centre for economic activity, digital inclusion and essential public services for Sekoma and neighbouring villages. Its location along the Trans-Kalahari Highway also creates opportunities for local businesses and rural entrepreneurs to access regional trade routes connecting Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.
Tshere highlighted the P34.5 million Broadband Expansion Project, a partnership between the Universal Access and Service Fund (UASF) and Orange Botswana. The project has delivered 12 mobile broadband and voice coverage sites along the highway.
Further network optimisation and infrastructure sharing with Mascom and Botswana Telecommunications Corporation Limited (BTCL) are expected to expand connectivity options for residents, farmers and travellers by the end of the next financial year.
The minister said modernised postal networks could help young people and rural producers reach buyers in major cities and international markets, creating more opportunities for local businesses to grow.
He emphasised that the benefits of technological advancement, connectivity and economic opportunity should reach every community across Botswana, regardless of location or circumstances.
