Angola Cables is expanding the capacity and performance of its transatlantic network using Ciena’s high-capacity optical technology across the MONET and South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) submarine cable systems.
MONET spans 10,556 kilometres between the United States and Brazil, while SACS connects Brazil with Angola across 6,165 kilometres. Together, the systems provide a direct digital route between Angola and the United States with a reported round-trip delay of 130 milliseconds.
The upgrade is designed to support growing bandwidth requirements from hyperscale companies, cloud providers and AI-driven applications. Angola Cables said the deployment will also improve network flexibility and simplify operations through software-based control and management capabilities.
The company will deploy Ciena’s Waveserver powered by WaveLogic 6 Extreme, the 6500 Packet-Optical platform and Navigator Network Control Suite. The technology will increase capacity across the existing subsea infrastructure while providing more flexible connectivity options for hyperscale, cloud, wholesale, content and enterprise customers.
The deployment will enable 800G client interfaces on the MONET system and strengthen connectivity across routes linking the United States, Brazil and Africa.
Angola Cables CTO Adriano Caldevilla said the submarine cable systems provide a digital bridge between Africa and the Americas, with the company seeking to expand the scale and flexibility of its infrastructure as demand from hyperscalers and cloud providers grows.
Ciena said its coherent optical and software technologies will support higher-capacity and more intelligent networks as demand for AI, cloud services and digital applications increases.
The upgraded network will allow Angola Cables to offer connectivity capacities ranging from 100 Gbps services to a full fibre pair, including spectrum and Managed Optical Fibre Networks. The deployment builds on the companies’ previous collaboration to increase capacity across Angola Cables’ subsea network.
