Beneficiaries of Ghana’s 2025 Girls-In-ICT programme are gaining practical exposure to the technology industry through the ongoing Girls-In-ICT Open Day, with an industry visit to ATC Ghana in Accra giving participants an opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications.
Held on September 8, 2026, the visit was designed to provide the girls with greater insight into Ghana’s technology sector and the career opportunities available within it. During the visit, participants toured ATC Ghana’s facilities and learned about the company’s different departments and their roles in supporting telecommunications infrastructure and digital connectivity.
The beneficiaries also participated in an innovation challenge, working in groups of 10 to develop technology-based projects. The challenge was designed to strengthen creativity, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills while encouraging participants to apply knowledge gained through the Girls-In-ICT programme.
The projects demonstrated the participants’ growing interest in artificial intelligence, automation, programming and engineering. One team developed an AI-powered smart liquid-level assistant designed to support visually impaired people, while another created a human piano using Makey Makey.
Other participants developed an artificial intelligence project focused on teaching machines to understand humans. Additional teams worked on a Rubik’s Cube solver, an automated crane for warehouses and factories, and a colour sorter designed to classify seeds and fruits based on quality and ripeness.
The innovation challenge also featured projects focused on warehouse management and goods sorting. Another team used Python to develop a budget tracker and chatbot, demonstrating how programming skills can be applied to practical challenges beyond traditional classroom exercises.
Through the projects, participants were able to put their digital knowledge into practice while working collaboratively to develop solutions to real-world problems. The experience also exposed them to different technology fields and the potential applications of digital tools across industries.
The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations said the industry visit is expected to encourage beneficiaries to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, as well as emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, software development and automation.
The Girls-In-ICT Open Day continues to combine mentorship, industry exposure and hands-on learning as part of efforts to equip young girls with the technical skills and confidence needed to participate in Ghana’s growing digital economy.
