Nigeria has taken another significant step toward strengthening its position as one of Africa’s emerging artificial intelligence leaders with the launch of the Nigeria AI Scaling Hub (NAISH), a national platform designed to accelerate AI innovation, collaboration, and large-scale deployment across the country. Announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, the initiative introduces a shared national computing infrastructure hosted by Galaxy Backbone and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The hub addresses one of the biggest barriers to AI development globally—limited access to high-performance computing resources—by providing innovators, researchers, startups, universities, and government institutions with the infrastructure needed to develop advanced AI solutions within Nigeria.

The establishment of a national shared compute infrastructure marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. Access to computing power remains one of the most expensive and challenging aspects of artificial intelligence development, often limiting the ability of startups, researchers, and academic institutions to build, train, and deploy sophisticated AI models. Through the Nigeria AI Scaling Hub, these barriers are expected to reduce significantly, creating an environment where innovators can focus on solving real-world challenges instead of struggling with infrastructure limitations. The initiative also demonstrates the government’s commitment to building a sustainable AI ecosystem capable of supporting homegrown innovation while reducing dependence on external computing resources.

Beyond infrastructure, the Nigeria AI Scaling Hub has been designed as a collaborative ecosystem that brings together innovators, startups, researchers, universities, government agencies, development partners, and industry stakeholders under one national platform. By encouraging knowledge sharing, strategic partnerships, and technical collaboration, the hub aims to help promising AI projects transition from early-stage pilots into scalable solutions capable of addressing national priorities. This collaborative approach is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s research ecosystem, encourage innovation across sectors, and create stronger connections between public institutions and the country’s rapidly growing technology community.

A major highlight accompanying the launch is the introduction of the Scaling AI for Development (SAID) Challenge, a programme created to connect Nigerian AI startups with government institutions seeking innovative solutions to improve public service delivery. The challenge provides startups with an opportunity to demonstrate proven AI applications capable of addressing practical challenges across multiple sectors while accelerating digital transformation within government. By opening applications to AI companies with scalable technologies, Nigeria is creating a pathway for locally developed innovations to contribute directly to national development, improve public sector efficiency, and expand the country’s growing digital economy.

The Nigeria AI Scaling Hub represents more than the launch of a new technology platform—it reflects the country’s broader ambition to become a leading artificial intelligence innovation hub across Africa. Supported by strategic partners including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Galaxy Backbone, Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, and other ecosystem stakeholders, the initiative combines digital infrastructure, collaboration, talent development, and innovation into a unified national strategy. As Nigeria continues investing in AI capabilities, shared infrastructure, and startup development, the country is laying the foundation for globally competitive AI solutions that address local challenges, strengthen public services, drive economic growth, and position Nigeria at the forefront of Africa’s rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
